On Wednesday, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey overturned a cease and desist order against Comcast stemming from a 2012 lawsuit backed by the Electrical Board that had kept the company from installing security systems in two towns in Massachusetts.

The ruling states Comcast’s Xfinity system “does not constitute a security system” and the company is free to continue operating in those areas without obtaining a license or permit for its security work.

According to a source with knowledge of the legal proceedings, two electrical inspectors — one in Andover, Mass., the other in Amesbury — filed the cease and desist orders for those areas back in 2012, which was upheld by the Electrical Board.

Comcast then appealed the lawsuit. The Massachusetts Systems Contractors Association (MSCA) suspended the lawsuit based on the Electrical Board’s decision, leaving it in the hands of the Attorney General, the source said.

The Attorney General’s decision overturns the Electrical Board’s decision, stating that Comcast’s Xfinity system does not fall under the regulations of normal security system installation. Comcast is now free to operate as it normally would have without a license or permit.

Xfinity Home Monitoring Plan Explained

Xfinity Home's monitoring plan is very different from the plans offered by most alarm companies. Instead of multi-tiered plans that let you choose the features you want, Xfinity offers only two monitoring plans. The first plan, for $40 a month, already covers everything from home security monitoring, to home automation and even video monitoring. The second plan, for $50 a month, also includes all those features plus 24/7 video recording. The difference between 24/7 recording and video monitoring is that the latter only records short clips when an event is detected. With 24/7 recording, your cameras will record continuously day and night to capture every moment of everyday, allowing you to look back on moments missed by your sensors. Recordings are stored in the cloud for 10 days, during which you can play back, download, or share parts of the video.

Bundle Up

Xfinity is a triple-play company that offers security, cable, and internet. If you bundle all three or any two of these services, Xfinity is willing to give you a discounted introductory price. The discount varies per region, but to give you an example, we were able to get a $70/month quote for Xfinity Home ($40/month), cable ($30/month), and internet ($50/month). That's $50 saved per month by just bundling up services.

Take note that the introductory price is only for the first year. After the initial year, your monthly fee will switch back to the regular price. Unfortunately, you can't cancel service right away because Xfinity Home requires a 2-year contract. Cancelling it without finishing the contract will incur penalties.
